The Case for Managed M365
Why most Microsoft 365 deployments leave security and value on the table.
Microsoft 365 Business Premium is one of the best-value IT products available for small and mid-sized businesses. It includes email, collaboration tools, device management, endpoint protection, and identity security — all in one licence. The problem is that most of it ships turned off. When an IT provider sets up a new tenant and walks away, they typically configure email and Teams and leave the rest. The security features that justify the Premium price tag require deliberate configuration and ongoing maintenance.
The most common gap we find in tenant audits is multi-factor authentication that was enabled at the tenant level but never enforced — meaning users can still sign in without it if they dismiss the prompt. A close second is conditional access policies that were never configured, leaving sign-ins from unusual locations or unmanaged devices ungated. Third is former employee accounts that were never fully deprovisioned — email disabled, but SharePoint access intact, OneDrive accessible, and in some cases admin roles still assigned. These are the findings that appear in breach investigations.
